Electrical checks

Have you seen the light?

When you take your caravan out of hibernation, the electrics are essential, as going on holiday will be really difficult without them. Before turning on all the lights and flipping switches straight away, check that the CEE cable is completely unwound from the cable drum and is not damaged. Any cable breaks could cause a fire. Also check the adapter for damage and keep this in mind when starting the electricity supply: Does it get too hot too quickly? Then something is not right, and you need to cut off the power supply straight away and visit a garage. You should also check all other connections, such as connectors, wires and other cables, for damage. Now you can switch all the lights on to check whether any bulbs need to be replaced. Caution: Halogen lamps can get very hot very quickly. You should therefore wear gloves when touching them.

Test the smoke detector and replace it if necessary. Also check the residual-current circuit breaker is working by pressing the button. If a consumer in the caravan is operated at a higher power level than 2 kW, the fuse in the power supply system needs to be at least 16 Amps. Consult a specialist once a year to have the cut-out switches, screw fittings and connector cables checked.

If you have a CEE right-angle connector with rear socket in the caravan, you should only use a rubber, sealed IP44 Schuko plug.

Warning: Deep discharge will destroy the battery and make it unusable. To protect the battery, make sure it is not permanently discharged through quiescent current.
